THE GRADE 1 AND DEVELOPMENT BANDS
The Manawatu Scottish Pipe Band, formed in 1927, operates as three groups under the aegis of the Scottish Society.
The Grade one band was New Zealand Champion for six years from 2001 - 2006. It regained the title in 2008.
In 2004 the band also became the Australian champion, the first New Zealand band
since 1974 to win both titles.
The Grade 3 band is also well performed, achieving a regrading to Grade 2.
A development band for beginners is a recent innovation in 2003.
The band has developed an international profile with encouraging forays to Scotland in 1997, 1999, 2003 ,2005, 2007, achieving a creditable 8th in the World. It is returning to Scotland in 2009, to compete in the World Championships.
The Band enjoys a growing reputation as a concert band. The two key factors of
innovation and musicality influence the bands concert format leading to a staunch
local following and increasing interest in other centres and overseas.
Two recordings are now available, The Calling and Twelve Thousand Miles.
